Manufacturing Process for Steel Bars & Rods

Black steel bars are produced in a rolling mill by heating raw materials such as billet, blooms, etc. at a temperature around 1200 Deg. C. The billets are passed through a number of rolls to achieve the desired size and shapes such as rounds, hexagons, flats, and angles. Bright bars are more expensive then hot rolled black bars as the dimensional accuracy is much higher. Bright steel bars are produced from black bars by passing through dies in a cold condition or by turning the bars in a peeling machine and some other processes. Some times heat treatment such as annealing is done before cold finishing. Bright bars are widely used for manufacturing machined components used in various engineering applications across industry verticals. Meanwhile black steel bars are used for both machining and forging applications. Grinding bars are processed from polished or bright bars and grinded into bars of more polished and smoother finishes. After being grinded, the tolerance of bars is almost negligible. For manufacturing or processing bars and rods, we usually undertake the following types of processes depending on the size and tolerance requirements. Cold Drawing of Steel Bars The black steel bars are drawn through dies of the required shape. The raw material is chosen depending on the shape to be drawn. This increases the yield strength and tensile strength. This also eliminates a number of surface imperfections caused due to the rolling process. Heat treatment can be carried out to achieve the desired mechanical properties. Peeling of Bars & Rods The black bars are turned to achieve the desired size and tolerance. This process eliminates all surface imperfections. But internal imperfections if any are exposed. This process does not change the mechanical properties of the bars. Grinding of Steel Bars The grinding process is used to narrow the tolerances and improve the surface finishes of the above two processes. This process may be carried out after the either of the above to processes. Polishing Steel Bars Under this process black steel bars are simply polished on the surface. The polishing process does not change the yield strength and tensile strength of the steel bars. This process is generally used to simply improve the surface finish of the bars. Cold Rolling of Steel Bars Cold Rolling is used to produce complex shapes of steel bars, by passing the raw material through custom made dies.
